To all our wonderful friends and family.

It is with much sadness that we must share the news of yet another victim of breast cancer. Our dear friend, Ramsey Lee, died last Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the age of 53. Ramsey and Ruthanne shared their journeys of metastatic breast cancer together. They were power-walking partners and learned together how to follow the dual paths of living life to the fullest while accepting their inevitable deaths. Ramsey was a remarkable woman, who epitomized grace, courage, altruism, humor, and beauty. On Sunday, Ramsey's husband, David, their two incredible daughters, Katie and Merritt, and the three of us, took a walk together around the Weston Reservoir, one of Ramsey's and Ruthanne's favorite walking routes. It was far too reminiscent of another walk our two families shared in November, shortly after Ruthanne's death. Our two families are so very fortunate to have each other in our lives. Our thoughts and love go to David, Katie, and Merrit, as they now begin their journey without Ramsey.

Please see Ramsey's web page for a moving and beautiful tribute to this very special woman: www.ramseylee.com.

To Dr. and Mrs. Anne Simmons,Bob, Nick, and Laura.

I think of you often, but especially so on this Fourth of July. I will feel very close to Ruthanne today.

We just celebrated Canada Day, but my heart will be in Boston today, especially so when I will watch your spectacular fireworks on the Charles River. I never fail to watch the Boston Pops on this occasion and I am always moved beyond belief.

Have a happy Fourth of July and a wonderful summer, filled with joyful memories of Ruthanne.

Love,

Marguerite

To all of Ruthanne's friends and family, especially Bob, Nick and Laura.
I can't put into words how honored I am to receive a scholarship in the name of Ruthanne. In reading other messages, looking at pictures and meeting briefly with her family, it is obvious how wonderful, special and loved she was.
Over the past few weeks I have been overwhlemed with the prom, graduation, graduation parties and saying goodbye to high school but in all honesty, receiving the Ruthanne B. Simmons, MD Memorial Scholarship is something I'm most proud of. Although I never knew Ruthanne, I can tell she had a sense of life and happiness about her that still inspires other people. I hope to carry these great qualities with me to college and beyond in her honor. Thank you again to Bob, Nick and Laura and I hope I get to know you better in the near future.
Love, Kathleen O'Brien

Today is Class Day in Needham, the event at which graduating high school seniors celebrate their accomplishments and where awards and scholarships are announced. Laura, Nick, and I are very fortunate to be able to attend the celebration today in order to present the first annual Ruthanne B. Simmons, M.D. Memorial Scholarship.

We established this scholarship in order to give something back to our wonderful community of Needham that had been so important to Ruthanne during her last nine years of life, and to support the development of an individual who has demonstrated the important characteristics that made Ruthanne the unique and giving person she was. Thanks to the incredible generosity of so many of you, the scholarship was funded quickly and successfully.

The scholarship is given to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the sciences; has made valuable contributions to the community; and has exhibited a positive and cheerful attitude with friends, classmates, teachers, supervisors, and family.

I am very pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2003 Ruthanne B. Simmons, M.D. Memorial Scholarship is Kathleen O’Brien.

In the days to come, we will be including a brief biography of Kathleen in the scholarship section of this web site (click on “Donations” in the yellow bar to the left).
